Built in the early 1800s, this building can be described as “they don’t make them like this anymore!
There are many aspects of it that are very interesting. The transom panel of glass over the front windows was beneficial years ago to provide much needed natural lighting to the inside. Recently I learned that the designer for these glass prisms was architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright designed and patented 90+ styles in the late 1800s.
The detail that always drew my attention when I was a small child was the prisms in the entrance foyer floor. When walking with my Mother down Main Street, I was always drawn to the shiny glass tiles. Now I know these are called “sidewalk prisms”. They were used to direct light from the sky on the upper face and refract it back into the basement where it was needed, and were scientifically correct in form to obtain the greatest possible refracting surface and to utilize every ray of daylight. They were set in cement in cast-iron frames, and are visible today from the underside. Today, when I am in the basement, I still take time to gaze at them, and continue to hope that some day restoration will be feasible.
The individual rooms upstairs were separate businesses through the years. One room is soundproofed leading us to assume that is was occupied by the lawyer. Each door has the frosted glass panel, and most of the interior rooms have a six-panel window that swings open into the room. This created ventilation in a time when air conditioning was unheard of. Each room also had a separate electrical entrance and phone line. The hardware is still in place, and visible to visitors.
Speaking of visitors, well maybe he should be described as resident, we also have a ghost upstairs. He is quiet most of the time, and doesn’t put forth too much effort into scaring anyone. Over the years, several people have described him to me without much variance from his nationality to what he wears. Of course, most customers immediately want to know if I am scared to be here alone. My answer being, “no”, because I work late at night in my office which is located upstairs. On occasion he has made his presence known, and the little hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up. Additionally, there have been those times when one of us have made the trip up the stairs to see who was up here walking around when in fact there wasn’t a soul? If my ghost is of interest to you, I will be glad to share what I know about him when you visit the store.
The business has evolved from antiques being the primary business in the beginning to home decor, floral designs, gifts, gourmet products and home textiles being the essence of the business now. Times have changed and so has our product mix. Although, you will find a very large selection of depression glass, old books, magazines, ads, toys, and antique furniture, I am proud of the diversified product lines and services that are now available. I hope you enjoy shopping online, but would enjoy having you visit the brick & mortal store!
See ya soon!
